Here In Australia it is Spring time again and time for hatching chickens. We don't have a rooster so I have to buy fertilized eggs. I always like to get pure breeds rather than crossbreeds. Then I know what the final hens will look like.
We bought 18 eggs, 12 of Dark Barred Plymouth Rock Bantams and 6 Columbian Wyandotte Bantams. Only bantams for me. I had been searching for the dark barred Plymouth Rocks for a couple of years. Bantam varieties of these are hard to find in Australia. I was so excited to have my eggs.

We set them in a warm incubator at 38 degrees and put water in it every day. On the 7th day it was very hot and the incubator over heated. It was at 44 degrees when we found it. Well, I thought, that is the end of that. But we kept the incubator going on the off chance that there were a few strong chickens in there. It has stayed at 38 degrees since then.
I candled the eggs a week later and it appeared there was a possibility of four chicks. Whoopee. A few days later I checked again, removing the empty eggs and the ones where the chicks had died. Yes, four large chicks. They are due out in a few days. Hope everything is good with them and that they are all females.
